A RAILWAY worker is running a marathon to raise cash for a cancer charity in memory of his uncle.
Drew Welham, 30, of Peregrine Close, Clacton, is taking part in the Brighton Marathon for Cancer Research UK.
He is running in memory of his uncle Steve Matthews, from Kent, who died in June last year after battling cancer.
The former Clacton County High School student, who is a signaller for Network Rail, based in Colchester, hopes to raise at least £500 for the charity.
“I find running a little boring, but took it up to keep fit,” said Drew, who also volunteers as a technician at Clacton’s West Cliff Theatre.
“After running the Manchester Marathon, I didn’t think I would do another.
“But for some crazy reason I soon signed up for Brighton.
“Not long after doing so, my dear uncle Steve passed away after months and months of fighting cancer.
“He was given the all-clear, but he was so weak from the chemotherapy that shortly after he sadly died.
“I knew straight away that I now had a reason to run this marathon - to raise money for Cancer Research and help the fight against cancer.”
Drew runs the Brighton Marathon on April 6. To donate go to justgiving.com/Drew-Welham.
