COASTGUARDS received an emergency call alerting them to a windsurfer in trouble just off Martello Bay in Clacton.
But the report was confirmed to be an outfall marker floating in the sea.
The top of the marker had fallen off and it was left leaning to the side, leading to it being mistaken for a windsurfer.
The call was considered to be a false alarm with good intent.
