A PROJECT has been launched to boost Walton’s weekly market place and turn it into a major attraction for locals and visitors.

The market is held once a week, with sellers setting up stalls on Millennium Square just off High Street.

Organisers say the market is a popular community facility, but is limited by a lack of stallholders wanting to come to the town.

But Frinton and Walton Town Council, which oversees the market, is developing a range of ideas to make the market more attractive and push it forward.

Market development officer Alec Smith said: “Many traders find it difficult to justify coming to the town, the apparent lack of development often being a significant factor in that decision.

“But we are changing this and there are a number of different avenues being pursued to boost the potential of the market."

And Mr Smith says a lot of the market ideas will make the area more attractive for sellers.

He added: “There are any number of different avenues to pursue and we want the summer of 2014 to be the best we’ve had for a long time.”
