THERE are fears a 24ft high replica of the helter skelter that blew down on Clacton Pier in a massive storm could block views.

A new play area that reflects Clacton’s history is being planned for the town’s West Greensward.

The 200 square metre site, opposite Clacton Bowling Club, would include two custom-made pieces of play equipment.

They include designs based on the helter skelter that was on Clacton Pier until it was destroyed in a storm last year and the boat Nemo, which gave visitor trips from the resort’s beach in years gone by.

Ward councillor Chris Griffiths welcomed the new play area, but said he was concerned about the 24ft high helter skelter.

“In general, I am quite supportive of having more play equipment on greensward, but I will need to speak to residents," he said.

“I am a little worried about the height of the helter skelter, which would be quite a large structure.

“People in flats there have nice sea views, which they won’t want to be blocked.”

Tendring Council says the designs were chosen to provide iconic play equipment that reflects Clacton’s history.

The application is expected to be decided by Tendring Council’s planning committee before February 2.
