A NEW version of a controversial housing development in Frinton has been launched.

Developers want to build a housing estate on a site off Wittonwood Road – the last site free for major development within the Frinton gates.

Plans for a 54-house development on the site were first launched in 2011 and rejected.

But developers returned last year with a scaled-down application to build 38 homes.

That plan went before Tendring Council, but district councillors asked for it to be deferred so they could discuss further changes with the developers.

A new plan has now been launched including 37 homes and a communal play area – added at the request of the district council.

It would include two, three and four-bedroom homes, with three properties set aside for affordable housing.

But Frinton and Walton town councillors have recommended refusal of the new plan too.

They say the proposed access point is poor and would create a traffic logjam at the nearby gates.

Councillors also fear the town does not have the infrastructure to support a development of that size, and criticised the placement of the play area addition.

The Wittonwood Road site was once used as an above-ground reservoir.

But it has long been vacant and was earmarked for development on the new local plan.

Tendring Council will have the final say on the newly amended proposal.
