A CRACKDOWN was launched to cut down on irresponsible alcohol sales and stop street drinkers plaguing Clacton.

Tendring Council worked with police in a week of action, speaking to business owners and targeting off-licences flagged up for selling high strength alcohol to street drinkers.

During the week one retailer was handed an £80 penalty for selling booze to a man who was already drunk.

The crackdown was launched to help keep Clacton streets clear of anti-social drinkers during the day.

Council leader Peter Halliday said: “Most retailers were in favour of promoting responsible sales – especially where street drinkers or other vulnerable people are concerned.

“We are not out to hinder business but it is all about championing a socially responsible approach to the sale of alcohol for everyone’s benefit.”

The campaign is ongoing with police and council staff continuing to visit retailers in the lead up to Christmas.

Chief Insp Cat Barrie said: “I will not tolerate retailers flouting the laws and will take positive action at every opportunity.

“Our goal is to make Tendring an enjoyable place for people to live, work and visit without fear of being harassed and every person has a social responsibility to work towards this.”
