COUNCIL staff will carry out regular seafront checks after dangerous fishing line traps were discovered on the promenade near Frinton.

The wire was stretched across the town’s Lower Promenade near Frinton Golf Club, creating an almost invisible hazard a few feet off the ground.

It was reported by a wheelchair-bound man who was knocked to the ground after hitting the fishing line, and police issued a warning last week.

They believe it was set up by malicious pranksters to knock cyclists off their bikes.

Tendring Council seafront staff will carry out regular checks along the seafront while the problem persists in a bid to keep residents safe.

Nick Turner, the council’s coast protection boss, said: “I would urge whoever did this to put a stop to it before someone is seriously injured – and anyone who knows who it is to come forward.

“I find it extremely hard to believe anyone would be so irresponsible and put people’s lives at risk in this way. It just beggars belief.

“We as a Council spend money on making these areas as attractive and user-friendly as possible and I want them to stay that way.”
