Clacton: Rogue trader warning in storm aftermath
2:00pm Thursday 31st October 2013 in News
ROGUE traders have been targeting residents whose property was damaged in the storm’s high winds.
Trading Standards say conmen will use the storm damage to prey on unsuspecting homeowners.
There have already been instances in Holland-on-Sea, where rogue traders have been going door-to-door and offering fence repairs for over-inflated prices.
Essex County councillor Roger Walters said: “Rogue doorstep traders will try to take advantage of any damage caused by the storm and will often target the more vulnerable in our communities.
“They will use the storm to frighten elderly and vulnerable residents into having work done where it is unnecessary, or they will fix the damage but charge exorbitant prices.
“We want to be very clear. Never do business with cold callers offering household repairs or maintenance.
“The experience that people are put through by these rogue traders can be life changing for them.”
Trading Standards has urged people to consult their insurance company before getting repair work done.
Anyone who has been targeted by cold callers should call 08454 040506.
