Children's centre in Clacton to close
7:30am Monday 28th October 2013 in News
CHILDREN’S centre services in Clacton face the axe in a bid to save cash.
ABC Together, which is held within a private nursery in Chingford Avenue, is one of 11 earmarked for the axe by Essex County Council to save £2.5 million by 2016.
Holland Valley Centre in Oxford Road, Clacton will be merging with the St James’ centre which runs at the same site; but ABC Together Children’s centre services will merge with The Rainbow Centre on Old Pier Street in Walton.
The Walton centre is seven miles away and a 23 minute drive.
Andrew Erksine, county councillor for Tendring Rural East, has hit out at the move.
He now hopes to meet with Dick Madden, Essex County councillor for families and children, at the ABC Together site to discuss the proposals.
Mr Madden said: “Making savings from the children’s centre budget can only be achieved by focusing use of our resources on actual services for children and less on buildings and overheads."
A consultation on the plans ends on December 5 - visit essex.gov.uk/childrenscentres
