Residents view new plans for cinema and supermarket

RESIDENTS have welcomed plans for a new superstore and cinema in Clacton but raised fears it could bring further housing developments in the future.
Designs for the new six screen multiplex cinema and a supermarket, rumoured to be Asda, were on display at Clacton Town Hall on Thursday, October 17.
The massive Clacton Gateway scheme is earmarked for land off the Brook Retail Park roundabout on the A133.
It would see a superstore and petrol station, cinema, and up to four restaurants including a drive-through.
Gwen Mitchell, who went to view the exhibition, said: “I question if we really need another food store, and a lot of the jobs they create are part time ones but I suppose that’s better than nothing."
But there were also concerns that the development could pave the way for future housing estates close by.
The proposal is being put forward by major Clacton developer Britton Construction, based at the town’s Oakwood Business Park.
As well as the buildings, the scheme will see the creation of an open parkland area, including an extension to the town’s Pickers Ditch walkway.
Land is also included to extend the nearby Brook Country Park.
If planning permission is granted it is hoped the complex would be open in 2015.
