Walton: Coastguard station set for axe in 2015
12:00pm Friday 25th October 2013 in News
WALTON’S under-threat coastguard station has been given a stay of execution – but will be finally forced to close in 2015.
The East Terrace base was originally set to be axed next year as part of a massive cost-cutting scheme by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
Walton’s station, which coordinates rescues across the area, was one of eight earmarked for the chop to save £20million.
And a final closure date for the station was announced by transport minister Stephen Hammond in the House of Commons last week.
It was originally set to close in September 2014, but that date has now been pushed back to June 2015.
Walton PCS union rep Karen Paradise said: “This means that we are open for another nine months and it gives us a little bit of stability.
“It means we will be here to provide the vital service for longer, and we have another nine months to fight against this closure."
