County council 'cuts to democracy'
OPPOSITION parties at County Hall have hit out at a move they say cuts democracy.
Future county council meetings will be limited to debating just five motions - with two reserved to the ruling Tory administration.
The change, narrowly passed at yesterday’s full Essex County Council meeting, means there are just three motions available to the five opposition groups.
Councillors from all the opposition groups hit out at the plans to cut the number of debates, saying it reduced democracy, removed flexibility and the ability to discuss current issues, and took power away from individual members to raise topics in the council chamber.
