Clacton: Residents warned over cold-calling rogue trader incidents
2:00pm Wednesday 16th October 2013 in News
RESIDENTS have been urged never to do business with cold callers after a spate of incidents involving rogue traders across Essex.
One incident in Clacton nearly saw an elderly man hand over £10,000 to a predatory salesman.
The man, in his 80s, agreed to let a cold caller clear his garden.
But the trader proceeded to block pave his entire front and back gardens, even blocking his drains with discarded building materials.
Trading Standards were called in to help the man, and have been working to clamp down on the cold calling trend.
Roger Walters, Essex County Council cabinet member for Trading Standards said: “We are increasingly frustrated that rogue doorstep traders are still having such an impact on residents in our county, so we want to be very clear - never do business with cold callers.
“The experience that people are put through by these rogues can be life changing for them, so we must do all we can to raise awareness of the dangers of doing business with doorstep callers offering household maintenance and repairs."
