Clacton: Knife crime campaigner demands return of police powers
2:00pm Monday 30th September 2013 in News
A KNIFE crime campaigner has demanded for police to be given permanent stop and search powers after the latest spate of knife attacks in Clacton.
Earlier this year Clacton police invoked special section 60 powers in a bid to cut down on knife crime.
It gave them the power to stop and search anyone if they believe they might be carrying a weapon.
The powers were only temporary, but anti-weapon campaigner Caroline Shearer has called for them to be put in place permanently after two men were stabbed in Clacton last week.
She said: “Special measures need to be brought in and kept in immediately.
“It is getting to the point where nobody wants to go out in the evenings because they are scared.
“We saw a difference when the special powers were in place before. The crime rate dropped and we need these in place again, permanently.
“The proof is in the pudding and the incidents over the last few days have shown something has to be done.”
Caroline’s son Jay was killed in a knife attack in September 2012, inspiring her Only Cowards Carry campaign.
