Walton: Lifeboat super-supporter rewarded for quiz night commitment
10:00am Monday 23rd September 2013 in News
A QUIZMASTER has been handed a special award after 18 years of fundraising for Walton RNLI.
John Rayner has supported his local lifeboat station throughout his life, but took that support to the next level in 1995 when he ran a fundraising quiz night at Martello Caravan Site.
And the quiz night events have turned into a monthly commitment since then.
Lifelong Walton resident John runs ten events every year, starting with a season-opener every March.
He conducts research and compiles the questions himself, before acting as quizmaster on the night.
After 18 years he has compiled more than 12,000 questions and run almost 180 quiz nights, raising more than £33,000 for the Walton lifeboat.
John’s dedication to the cause has now been recognised with a national award from the RNLI.
He was handed a silver statuette and a certificate at a ceremony in Walton, fittingly following his latest quiz.
The presentation was made by the Coxswain of the Walton and Frinton Lifeboat Gary Edwards and the branch chairman Stewart Oxley.
Mr Oxley said: “Everything the RNLI do is funded by voluntary contributions and without the continued commitment of supporters like John it would be almost impossible to continue operating the lifeboat service.”
