Former British number one opens new tennis courts
12:00pm Saturday 21st September 2013 in News
FORMER British number one Elena Baltacha has opened a new £250,000 all-weather court at a tennis club in Frinton.
Baltacha, who was ranked as number one until a knee injury last year, was guest of honour at the opening of the floodlit hard courts at Frinton Lawn Tennis Club.
She was invited to cut the ribbon alongside Cathie Sabin, deputy president of the Lawn Tennis Association.
Suffolk-based Baltacha often used the Frinton club for practice ahead of Wimbledon.
The new courts are part of a six-year project to develop a Tennis Academy programme and expand the club’s tournament programme.
The Lawn Tennis Association contributed a grant of £72,000 for the project, as well as giving a loan of the same amount. Money was also granted by Essex County LTA and Sport England.
An open day is taking place at the club today, Saturday, from 10am to 4pm.
