Walton lifeboat joins sinking yacht rescue
10:00am Wednesday 18th September 2013 in News
WALTON’S lifeboat was called into action to help a sinking yacht after coastguards heard a faint radio distress call.
Coastguards heard the call at about 12noon on Tuesday but were unable to contact the yacht.
They used radar to locate the vessel, which was leaking water about 30 nautical miles off the coast.
Walton’s all-weather lifeboat was one of several crafts called to the scene.
The Seaking rescue helicopter was already out on an exercise and managed to locate the struggling yacht, but did not have a winchman onboard.
A second chopper was called, along with a wind farm vessel and a nearby tanker.
There was one male onboard the yacht, and he was brought over to the lifeboat to be checked by a paramedic from one of the helicopters.
He did not need further treatment but was taken back to the shore by the Walton crew.
