HISTORIC barges and fishing boats are getting set for a spectacular race on the river Colne.
The race, which is organised by the Colne Smack Preservation Society, will start in Brightlingsea on Saturday.
The Smacks, ex-fishing boats used in local waters, and the Thames barges, which were used to carry cargo from Essex ports to London, will start and finish at Bateman’s Tower.
The smack race will start at 8.30am and will be followed by the barges at 9am.
The prizegiving ceremony will take place at Brightlingsea Sailing Club at 8pm, to which all spectators are invited. An evening supper has also been arranged at the club.
