10:00am Friday 16th August 2013 in News
A FUNDRAISER dressed up as famous movie alien E.T as she leapt from a pier to raise cash for charity.
Mel James, of Swallowdale, Clacton, took part in the annual Birdman competition in Worthing.
Competitors line up to throw themselves off the end of Worthing pier, usually in fancy dress or using home-made flying machines.
The contest is made up of a mix of competitors, some fundraisers and some serious flyers looking to set the record distance and scoop the £10,000 winnings.
Mel, who is completing 52 daring challenges over the course of the year, dressed as E.T with a home-made flying saucer to complete the leap of faith.
She completed the challenge to raise cash for a variety of mental health charities.
Mel said: “Everyone told me to not look down, but I ran, jumped and looked straight down. That sight was probably the scariest thing I've ever seen.”
There is a 35-foot drop from the pier launch platform to the sea below.
Mel added: “It was a once in a life time experience and I'm so pleased that I managed to put my fear aside and check it off my list.”
