CONTROVERSIAL plans for a major development of Walton Mere have been shelved.
An ambitious project which included creating a marina and building a supermarket on the Mere site were unveiled in 2011.
A planning application had been submitted to Tendring Council but has now been withdrawn by Silverbrook Estates, which owns the site.
The owners say they are still planning to develop the site, but will have to adjust their plans after a rival supermarket bid from Tesco was given the go ahead.
Helen Pudney, who was leading the project, said: “Planning permission has been granted for a new food store on the Martello site and it is therefore likely that we will want to make some changes to our master plan.
“Withdrawing the planning application gives us the time and freedom to do so.”
