Residents oppose Islamic centre bid

RESIDENTS have objected to controversial plans for an Islamic community centre in Clacton claiming the area is “crying out” for shops.

The Tendring Islamic Cultural Association last month submitted plans for the centre at the former Harmony beauty salon in Pier Avenue.

Applicant Mohammed Helal Miah said the vacant two-storey building, opposite the Pier Avenue Baptist Church, would be used for prayer meetings, education and religious festivals.

The plans will go possibly before the planning committee on April 23 for a decision rather than planning officers following a request from concerned councillors.

The council has so far received nine letters of objection to the plans and one letter in support of the proposal.

Mr Miah was not available for comment.
