Clacton: Council to tackle bird netting trap problem

TENDRING Council has launched a bid to cut down on the number of birds becoming trapped in netting in Clacton town centre.

The netting is up over most shops on Pier Avenue to protect the buildings and minimise the effect of bird fouling.

Concerned residents spotted several dead birds trapped in the nets and brought the problem to the council’s attention.

The council met with the residents, a Police Wildlife Crime Officer, a pest control company and the RSPCA to discuss the issue.

They decided to survey Pier Avenue to identify the problem areas.

Landlords will also be contacted by the council to remind them of their responsibilities and ensure their netting that is properly fitted and maintained.

This has to be a most horrible cruel way for birds to die, so pleased to hear that some action is going to be taken (and I hope it is not just words but real action).

Hello, I know a lot of business people wanting to start new buisnesses in clacton on sea and seeing dead birds rotting in netting is appauling and distressing. I will certainly inform these buisness people not to do any buisness with clacton if this continues. You want the economy to boom for your locals think again!!!! I also bring a lot of
tourist to clacton on sea and that's the last thing they want to see dead birds trapped in netting.

I'm so pleased to see a council taking some positive action for once with regards to this major problem.
The problems caused by the use of netting is present all over the UK as well as abroad. Local councils need to start listening and acting on people's concerns now as it is very distressing to continually see birds that are either dead, trapped, injured and starving to death as result of becoming trapped.
Regardless of people's views on pigeons it is a very cruel way of trying to deter these birds when there are so many other far more humane methods available.
I really hope this will now lead to some positive action and as a result lead other councils to take up this initiative.

I hope other council's will follow this one's example! Tattered netting and dead pigeons really give an appalling impression !

I am glad to see the council taking some action, hope they follow this through and its not just words. those poor birds getting trapped in the netting suffer a cruel slow death, there is no need for it whatsoever. look forward to seeing the solution you come to.
