Cold snap contrasts with 2012 spring heatwave
7:30am Friday 15th March 2013 in News By Dave Lambert
RARE subzero temperatures hit the coast this week in a sudden cold snap - a stark contrast to the unseasonal mini heatwave this time last year.
The freezing conditions saw temperatures drop to lows of -1 degrees on Clacton seafront, and snow flurries made it the six month in a row that the white stuff has fallen.
Meteorologist Tom Defty from the Essex Weather Centre said: “To have temperatures below freezing in March is very rare, a one in 25 year event, especially on the seafront where it is difficult to achieve such lows even in the middle of winter.
Exactly a year ago Tendring was basking in an unseasonal mini heatwave.
In March 2012 residents were sunbathing in 17 degree temperatures, in stark contrast to this year’s arctic conditions.
The Met office has predicted the current cold snap will continue in Tendring until the end of the week.
