Council saves £11,000 with direct debits

MORE than £11,000 has been saved in the past year thanks to Tendring taxpayers paying their bills by direct debit.
Tendring Council wrote to 23,000 residents to encourage them to settle their bills using the method.
It resulted in an extra 2,263 payers opting for direct debit, saving the council about £11,000 a year.
Paul Honeywood, cabinet member for benefits and revenues, said there are now 38,906 paying their bills this way.
“The overall figure has risen from 54 per cent to 57 per cent and this is the highest we have ever achieved,” he said.
“When you consider that ten per cent of all accounts had nothing to pay at annual billing this year because they are receiving full benefit or an existing exemption, it meant that 63 per cent of those who had a bill to pay did so by direct debit.”
Great Bromley top the charts with more than 78 per cent of households paying their bills by direct debit.
