Walton: Sculptor selling mini sculpture for war hero statue fund
3:00pm Wednesday 13th February 2013 in News
A SCULPTOR who is creating a statue of a Walton war hero is taking part in an exhibition to boost the statue fund.
Top sculptor John Doubleday is creating the life-size statue of Private Herbert Columbine, Walton’s Victoria Cross winner who died in the First World War.
He is exhibiting some of his work throughout March along with other artists at Sculpt Gallery in Tiptree.
One of the pieces on display will be a miniature version of the Columbine statue.
It will be on sale for £1,800, with that cash going straight into the fund for the full-size sculpture.
More than £36,000 has already been raised towards the £50,000 statue.
Mike Turner from the statue fundraising group said: “Hopefully the mini statue will sell and that will be another chunk of money towards the big version.
“Things are moving along quickly now. Something is happening every day and the end is in sight.”
