Volunteers needed for Jaywick beach clean

VOLUNTEERS are needed to help clean up the beach in Jaywick next week.

The beach clean initiative is being run by Essex Coastal Wardens, who will also carry out a litter survey at the same time.

Spokesman Emma Webb said: “Litter is a huge problem along our coasts.

"It doesn’t just look unpleasant, it can harm and even kill some of our best-loved marine wildlife, including seabirds, turtles and whales who have mistaken marine litter for food and actually eaten it.

“In many cases, this has resulted in starvation, poisoning or entanglement and ultimately a slow, painful death."

She added: “The Essex coastline is an internationally important area with a rich variety of wildlife and any help we can give to keep it free from litter is vitally important.”

Volunteers should meet at the Martello Tower, in Belsize Avenue, on February 21.
The clean-up runs from 11am to 3pm.

Anyone aged under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. To take part call 01206 764470 or email e.webb@tcv.org.uk .
