Travellers' site plan for day room rejected

PLANS to use a stable as a day room on a travellers' site in Weeley have been turned down.

Travellers at a site in Gutteridge Hall Lane wanted retrospective permission to use the building as a kitchen, lounge, utility and bathroom.

Tendring councillors slammed the application at a planning meeting.

They said they had suffered an ongoing battle in attempts to get travellers to follow rules.

Councillor Michael Talbot said: “When they first moved into this site they came overnight on a Bank Holiday weekend and by the end on the weekend they had a caravan on that site and a road put in.

"And that was before these officers even knew about it. We seem to be treading so carefully on eggshells.”

The application was refused despite being recommended for approval by officers.
