Special event to mark 60th anniversary of floods in Jaywick

A SPECIAL event will be held to mark the 60th anniversary of floods which killed 37 people in Jaywick.

The North Sea flooding on January 31, 1953, led to the deaths of 95 people across Essex, but mainly affected Jaywick and Canvey Island.

The Jaywick Local History Society will be hosting an exhibition to mark the anniversary.

It will include a short talk by author Patricia Rennoldson-Smith, who has written a book called The 1953 Essex Flood Disaster - The People's Story.

William Stevens, chairman of the Jaywick Local History Society, said: “To commemorate the occasion, the society is holding an exhibition of photographs and scanned copies of local and national newspapers from that time.

“We would be pleased to see anyone who had connections with Jaywick at that time.

“If anyone has any material that they would allow us to scan, then that too would be very welcome.”

The floods will be also be marked by 650 guests at a special ceremony at Chelmsford Cathedral on January 31.

The exhibition in Jaywick will take place at the Golf Green Hall, in Golf Green Road, on February 1 at 6pm.

Admission is free to members of the history society and will cost £1 for non-members.
