Clacton community bid to save Flicks cinema

Save our cinema: Steve Burdon, Alan Penney, Amanda Kira and David Moore
A FILM-FAN wants community members to step up and run an under-threat cinema in Clacton to stop it from closing.
Flicks cinema on Pier Avenue looks set to close after its owners Gala Coral Group confirmed they were looking to cut the service.
If the closure plans go ahead it will shut its doors for the final time on Saturday.
But resident Steven Burdon wants to see the cinema remain open, and wants the community to take charge and take over the running of the cinema.
Steven said: “I thought it might be possible to run the cinema but make it community based.”
His idea involves residents raising cash to fund the running of the cinema.
Steven added: “If Gala will lease us the cinema we will find money to run it and update it if need be.
“If Gala wanted to have a say in running it their expertise would be very welcome.
“We would need as much help as we can get for this, and quite a few people have come forward already."
People can add their support to the project by emailing mrflicks@hotmail.co.uk.
