Tendring: Man is mourned
Exclusive By Frances Leate

A community is mourning the loss of a talented young football player who lost his life on a road less than a mile from his home.

Ross Crouch, 23, of School Road, Lawford, was walking home after a night out in Brantham when he was involved in a collision with a car at about 12.30am in the early hours of this morning (Monday).

Ross, described as a talented young football player by fellow team members, was a central defender and club captain at Stanway Rovers, in Colchester.

Friends and family have been left shocked and devastated by the news of his death.

Ross had just returned from Bratislava where he had been celebrating the end of the season and had been out with friends in Brantham.

After saying goodbye he began walking to his home in School Lane, Lawford.

At about 12.30am he was involved in a collision with an Audi A3 car on the A137 at Cox's Hill, in Lawford.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "An Audi A3 motor vehicle was being driven along the A137 in the general direction of Colchester when it was in collision with a male person in the road.

"As a result of the collision a 23-year-old local man was conveyed to Colchester General Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead."

The driver of the Audi, a 34-year-old local man, was uninjured in the accident.

Ross had played for a variety of non-league teams, including Colchester United's youth team for two years, before moving to Stanway Rovers at the start of last season.

He came from a close family and his father, Nigel Crouch, shared his passion for football, playing for Ipswich Town in the 70s before playing for Colchester United during the 1980-81 season.

His Uncle, Steve Foley, also played for Colchester United and is now a skills coach at Ipswich Town.

He leaves behind his mum, Sharon, father Nigel, and brother, John, 21.

Ross was taking a bricklaying course at Colchester Institute and was due to set off on a two month backpacking trip around Australia with his girlfriend before returning to England in August.

Police are now investigating the crash and anyone who may have seen the accident or who may have been in the area at the time are asked to call Stanway Traffic on 01206 762512.
