Frinton: Mayor re-elected for second term

The mayor of Frinton and Walton is set to serve another year in office after councillors decided to break with tradition.

Tendring First councillor Terry Allen, who represents the Frinton ward, was re-elected at Frinton and Walton Town Council's annual meeting on Thursday.

Ten members of the council voted in favour of Mr Allen's re-election and only one voted against it. A further member abstained from the vote.

The town mayor traditionally only serves one year in the post, but councillors decided to break with the convention to allow Mr Allen, who was formerly leader of Tendring Council, to continue.

"The council has taken the decision that the mayor will be able to stand for two years," said Mr Allen.

"The reason put forward is they feel that just as the mayor gets into the job it has finished.

"If it ends after only one year the mayor's knowledge he accumulates in that year is lost.

"Over the past year I have enjoyed meeting the people of the town council area as well as joining local groups at their functions and talking to the many residents, groups and societies.

"The good thing about being given a second term as mayor is that I will be able to continue projects I have started and see them through to fruition."

Mr Allen, of Fourth Avenue, Frinton, has two children and is married to Linda, who was elected on to the council last year. Mr Allen joined the council in 1992.

Robert Bucke (Tendring First, Kirby Cross) was re-elected as vice chairman of the council. It is expected that he will be elected as mayor next year.
