Clacton: Have your say on town's future
 |
| A drawing from architects BDP |
THE public will have a chance to shape the future of Clacton at a series of exhibitions.
BDP Architects, which has been commissioned to draw up a vision for the resort, wants to know what residents think of its ideas.
The centrepiece in the blueprint is a new-look pier with a viewing platform and an aquarium.
Others ideas include creating a civic hub with a glass walkway, creating a community garden next to the railway station, a new retail sector in Jackson Road and Pier Avenue and re-establishing the Pavilion as a focal point on the seafront.
BDP Architects has been in talks with a community forum, made up of residents, voluntary groups and businesses, set up to guide the project.
Now residents are invited to an exhibition at the West Cliff Theatre between Thursday, May 15, and Friday, June 13, from 10am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4pm.
They will be encouraged to fill in questionnaires.
There is an "open day" on Saturday, June 7, in the town square.
Joanne Rogers, town centre manager, said: "The idea is to open it up to the wider community.
"None of the options are set in stone and this is people's chance to say what they like.
"We need to have a plan to get money from central government and excite the private and public sectors."
The Interaction Partnership, set up to improve life for residents in Clacton's Pier ward and Jaywick's Golf Green ward with a £3.8 million Government grant, has earmarked £94,660 for the strategy.
BDP did a similar regeneration scheme in Bognor Regis eight years ago which is now four or five major schemes are coming to fruition.
The architects say it is important to have ideas and support from the community before schemes can get any funding.

"The Interaction Partnership, set up to improve life for residents in Clacton's Pier ward and Jaywick's Golf Green ward with a £3.8 million Government grant, has earmarked £94,660 for the strategy".
Even more money from Jaywicks regeneration pot is being spent on TDC owned land and property in Town.
How long can TDC use Jaywicks plight as a deprived area, to gain grants, then to spend it on its own projects and buildings..
A G A I N
We have an old elected ward councillor we never see, who should be on the ball in serving our interests, but as he is now inline for the chair of TDC, hes not going to rock the boat now, is he.
So, as Jaywick and Pier ward are joined at the hip for gaining grants, lets have a published factual study of just who got what, penny for penny, to see who got what and when.
Lets see once and for all just how fair the grant distribution really is and has been spent.

I wonder how much of this will ever actually get off the blueprints and become reality. I am looking forward to seeing this vision at the exhibition but I bet most of it nevers get built.

Both are coastal Towns.
Both need money to stop the rot.
Both have good ideas.
Both will get the go - ahead...well, perhaps not.

I agree with Clackers. If this ever goes ahead I will have been dead for about 200 years when it happens

has earmarked £94,660 for the strategy.
Im afraid not.most of its money has been spent or taken care of.
even one or two of its grant recievers are moving to new addresses outside of pier ward.
can only guess why, can you.

[bold]With Refrence to the emntioned conderned resident of clacton!
jaywick has gone beyond the stage of regenaeration or helping as i have walked and drove throught jaywick sometimes.
I dont think the 4 million will scrape it from the state it is now let alone the 95k will just fill up a few holes in the roads of jaywick.
Be honest at least clacton town has a chance with the new look high street and layout.
Sorry but jaywick has just dropped well of the planet to be worth saving or investing any money ![/bold]

"Others ideas include creating a civic hub with a glass walkway,"
Are not the aspirations of TDC thats in the adopted local plan / soon to be local development framework, setting out the way to have provision for a new Town Centre glass encased shopping Mall.
Even Jaywicks regeneration money wont streach to that.
(might buy a burger stall inside though)

Of course the big question remains where exactly will this civic hub with glass walkway be? Jackson Road car park? The market on Pier Avenue? The old amusement arcade on Pier Gap? Other than that, you are looking at a huge redevelopment on land thats already occupied. This sort of development would be great but realistically cost will prove prohibitive.

No worries SIAII,
just get Jaywicks begging bowl out again,
more please sir, and as if like magic, we get "public" consultation that declares if to be spent on Golf Green AND Pier Wards...
Only Pier gets it share more than once...again.
