GOVERNMENT backing for a new multi-million pound airport off the Essex coast could be just a few months away, it was revealed this week.
The department of Transport is looking closely at a scheme by top London architects Covel Matthews International.
But and Essex County Council spokesman said the plans could meet with opposition if it goes ahead.
The £3.5 billion venture would be based on a manmade island off Foulness Point, about 12 miles south of Clacton.
And it would handle some 30 million passengers a year when it is fully developed in a bid to ease the burden on the capital’s existing airports.

CLACTON and other North-east Essex resorts may be in for a record season this year. That is already the verdict of many local hoteliers. They base their opinion on Easter bookings - usually a good indication of the season to come.
For, despite the fact that Easter has fallen much earlier this year, bookings are good - and in some cases excellent. Coach companies also report good bookings.
In a round-up of local hotels this week, the “East Essex Gazette” found that the mood was generally optimistic.

TEN Austrian children, five boys and five girls, will arrive in Clacton this Saturday with 19-year-old leader for a ten weeks’ holiday.
The children were selected by Austrian child-welfare authorities because of their acute need for a family care holiday. Between 9-14 years old they will enjoy family life and activities in addition to treats provided for them as a group.
One little English hostess celebrated her birthday this week-end and is looking forward to her guests’ arrival to complete the celebrations.
There will probably be a reception at the Progressive Hall before the children go to their separate homes.
An appeal is being made for contributions to the pocket money for the children.

DURING the next few days the electors of Clacton will have to make up their minds to whom they are going to entrust the government of the town. There are difficult times ahead. For four years Clacton has suffered under the shadow of the great war. To-day we are looking forward to the return of prosperity. But no one can contemplate the future without grave misgivings. There never has been a time when it is of greater importance that the best men should be chosen to control the fortunes of the town.
For ourselves we look for a progressive policy, but it must be combined with prudence and foresight. The attractions of the town as a health and pleasure resort must be developed, but in these days when wasteful extravagance runs riot in high places, there is a need for caution lest a worse thong befall us.
A great many people are supine and indifferent at election times. They take no interest. They make a foolish boast of not troubling with such matters. But when the controllers of the town take courses they do not approve of they are the first to cry and bemoan the incapacity of their rulers It is to be presumed that the electors know what policy they want carried out. It is up to them to see what they get.
