PORK professors and meat maestros from across the Tendring district are set to descend on Harwich for the Sausage Festival.

The fourth annual event will see dozens of bangers on offer across three pubs in the town tomorrow.

Guests are invited to blind test each of the entrants – which will be served at the New Bell Inn, the Hanover and the Alma – and vote for their favourite, before washing it down with a glass or two of real ale.

Flavours range from the traditional to the more extravagant, but there is sure to be something to tantalise every taste bud.

Starting the event is the wacky tradition of sausage throwing, where a representative from each competing butcher sees who can ping an out-of-date supermarket banger the furthest on the green close to St Nicholas’ Church.

The sizzling spectacle has become a firm favourite and last year Nick Aldridge – representing the Alma – managed to chuck his chipolata 150ft to take the title.

The sausage throwing begins at 11.30am, and all sausages will be available to taste from noon.
