South Essex college students looking for a job do not have far to go.

In October 2013, the college saw the opening of its own recruitment agency, Reed NCFE. It is one of only 14 colleges in the country to provide this partnership.

One year later, Reed is celebrating its first anniversary.

It was set up to help students to find full-time work after their studies and part-time work during their time at college. The service also offers career advice and help with CV writing and interview skills.

Sally Hawkins, Reed team leader, said: “Every student needs guidance about their careers and most are keen to find part-time jobs to provide an income while they are studying.

“It made obvious sense to set up this service, where the students are, at the heart of the college's three campuses.”

This year the Reed-NCFE team has placed 336 students into work. It will continue to help these and others for up to 12 months after they leave the college.

One student who was found a summer job is Iluba Rukanya, who has been working with the Stockvale Group. She said: “I found a summer job and Reed is helping me plan for when I finish my course in 2015.”

Among the first students to be found full-time work by the agency were Jennifer Thurkettle, Abbie Southgate and Scarlet Johnstone, who have secured full-time jobs with a City of London law firm. The three had all completed the legal secretary, level 3 diploma at the college.

Jennifer said: “Reed really helped with interview tips and how to present myself. The process has given me direction in building my career.”
