Colchester goes mad for X Factor finalist Olly Murs

ESSEX’S man-of-the-moment whipped a mammoth Colchester crowd into a frenzy.

The X Factor golden boy, who hails from Witham, warmed up his vocal chords ahead of Saturday’s grand final, with a showstopping performance at Leisure World.

From as early as 3pm, Olly’s fans started arriving in the leisure centre car park, in a bid to get as close to the red carpet as possible.

He was initially scheduled to arrive at about 6pm.

When he arrived with music mogul Simon Cowell, at almost 7.30pm, there were thousands of fanatics chanting the 25-year-old’s name.

Burly minders followed his every move and security guards had to hold barriers in place as fans eagerly jostled to reach out and touch the singer.

There were plenty of high fives and handshakes as he greeted close friends and family, including his mum Vicky and dad Peter, in the VIP section.

He also shared a joke as one of his pals, perched on someone’s shoulders, shouted “Olly, give me my guitar back”.

On his Essex return to perform in Colchester, Olly said: “It’s great to be back in Essex.

“Seeing everyone out there supporting me was phenomenal.

“I was completely gobsmacked.”

On the possibility of returning to work at the Witham call centre, he said: “I haven’t missed the call centre at all.

“I have missed my friends and family because I’m a working class boy and my old colleagues are great but if I went back there it would be a failure.”

The county’s first X Factor finalist caused scenes rarely seen at Leisure World, as police on horseback marshalled the crowds.

Chanting, singing and plenty of screaming could be heard streets away, as children, parents and grandparents alike eagerly anticipated his arrival.

Heart FM had the crowd singing on the mic while they awaited Olly and his mentor Cowell. Rows of adoring girls screamed back: “Murs, Murs, Murs”, after Martin and Su, from Heart, chanted: “Olly, Olly, Olly”.

Supporters of the former call centre worker went mad as he pulled into the car park in a black Rolls Royce.

The crazed reaction from adoring fans is something Olly will have to get used to, if he beats Joe McElderry and fellow Essex finalist Stacey Solomon, from Dagenham, at the weekend.

For about 15 minutes, with Cowell alongside him, he milked the chanting, applause and demands for autographs.

The Witham wonder kissed mums and daughters as the X Factor theme tune played aloud.

Footballers, playing on the nearby artificial pitches, even ran over to catch a glimpse of the popular crooner.

Summer Dalglesh, 11, had come straight from Philip Morant School, to join grandmother Shirley Pendleton in the queue.

“I’m really excited about seeing him live,” Summer said.

“He’s got all the moves and personality and he’s just got to win.”

Sisters Leanne and Kimberley Toynton know Olly from Witham and described him as “a top guy”.

“We know him from parties and gigs he did with his band,” said Leanne, 19.

“I last saw him a month before the show and he was saying about how he wanted to make it big. I never thought it was just talk because he’s a true performer.

“I hope he wins, but it all depends on whether he gets decent songs for the final.”

Six-year-old Rio Hughes had taken his place next to the red carpet, with his mum Hayley and nan Molly Bond.

“I think Olly is brilliant and is going to win,” said the Monkwick Infant School pupil.

Hayley, of Lord Holland Road, Colchester, said: “I hope we’re close to the front. Rio’s been watching it all, but we have to record the results show for him because it’s a bit too late.

“The Jedward twins were his favourites and he cried when they went out. But he’s always liked Olly.

“I think Olly’s a real entertainer and I went to school with the show’s presenter Dermot O’Leary. He was exactly the same then, a real clown.”

Leanne Panton, who works at Leisure World, was there with colleagues. “Olly gives everything he can and he’s got the whole lot – signing, dancing, charisma and sexiness,” said the 27-year-old.

“It’s been quite frantic here organising everything and there have been all sorts of rumours.

“I even heard Robbie Williams was coming, but that would just be too good to be true.”

Police had called in the the cavalry for Olly’s visit.

Alongside hordes of burly security guards patrolling the red carpet, four van-loads of police officers and two police horses were at Colchester’s Charter Hall.

Colchester district commander, Chief Insp Adrian Coombs, said: “We just didn’t now how many people would turn up for the event, which was organised at 48-hours notice.

“Anything from 600 to 6,000 people have turned up at similar events. As for any public event, security is down to the organisers, but we’re here just in case any issues arise.

“There were be additional patrols in Castle Park and the town centre through the night.”

Traffic management plans were drawn up by police to cope with an expected influx of cars heading to the gig, with late-night shopping in the town centre as well.

He added: “If needed the council can stop people coming in to Leisure World and only allow people to turn left out of it. Our main aim was to keep Cowdray Avenue flowing.”

Mr Coombs also said he had been “forced” to watch the show with his family, but thought Olly was “a real entertainer with a real chance of winning”.

I went late night shopping in town and it was great because all the teenagers and chavs were down at Charter Hall screaming their heads off at some geezer from Witham and that Cowell bloke who fleeces their parents for millions each year on overpriced phone lines for his glorified talent shows. Go Olly Go!

Crowed control??? really where was that then???? As everyone where i was standing along the red carpet was get squashed against the barriers including a 5 year old girl who ended up going home early after becoming so upset, she never even got to see the gig! we couldnt move and were even threated by one person with metal nunchucks! Even tho our whole section got missed out along the rep carpet by olly and simon it was still a **** good show. OLLY TO WIN!!

oh dear, what is this country coming to? people going mad over some cod eyed, rubber legged numpty...and a multi millionaire who is laughing at the bird brains taken in by his low budget and trashy product! What right minded person would take their young kids into that type of situation, they've got school the next day...oh I forgot, education isn't important anymore because nowadays its all about being famous for nothing isn't it?

shorty is right there was no crowd control what so ever! people were pushing and shoving there way through and crushing us into the barriers and when we complained we were ignored this was not right as children were gettin crushed and as for the security guard standing in front of us so we couldnt even get to see olly or simon was a bit of a joke. Apart from that olly was excellent brilliant singer an entertainer all round lets hope he wins.

Ooooh no...pin4apple is being nasty to me. Boo hoo hoo. If you take little kids somewhere with big crowds, there's a fair chance they will get squashed a bit. They were late starting the gig - so what - get over it. The concert was free so stop complaining. Why are most of you illiterate on here as well? Have none of you heard of grammar, punctuation and spelling? Over and out chumps!

No age limit...it's a parents responsibility to make sure their kids are not up late on school nights, not the organisers of the event. When kids go to bed late, they underperform at school and their behaviour suffers.

I hear kids as young as 5 were there. At that age they should be in bed not stood outside in the cold just so their selfish parents can get some satisfaction.

And to shorty 777, you say I am jealous! Of what? Certainly not your spelling and grammar.

Finally, Olly may well win, given the ridiculous hype that the local media has whipped up about him. The way some locals have reacted about him, such as naming a beer after him...quite frankly is pathetic. He's a cocky karaoke singer with wobbly legs and a terrible dress sense. He also has cod eyes! You lot are funny...

plankton do you have children? i'm guessin u dont because if you do they must live a very sheltered life! not stayin up late every now and then to watch some fireworks, halloween, school plays etc

Well coming from the medical side of this event, there was very little control of the crowds. There was not a dramatic number of people there but there was fears that it would be another repeat of the JLS concert. I must say that we did not have a large number of casualties but watching people climb on the fencing and rails was very dangerous and stupid. The police we spread out but covering the area which was needed and as for Health and safety with members of the public climbing of bike storage boxes and fencing.
Overall the event was a good sucess and enjoyed by all FA, AFA, ETAs Doctors and paramedics present.

Plankton its people like you who make this country at horrible place to live, you just cant resist having a moan about everything and anything. Yeah so what my spelling and grammer isn't that great so what no ones perfect you may think you are but im sure you have faults of your own. If you want to have a moan go tell someone who cares. seriously get a life get out a bit more then maybe you wont moan so much and actually have something good to say! Also E.W. is right every child stays up late at some point you cant keep them in the same routine until they leave school at 16 or 18 whatever it is now, they would probley end up like you plankton if everyone done that!

pin4apple, colchester says...
3:33pm Fri 11 Dec 09

To all you moaners above, namely 2 of them, TIMES CHANGE, or are you stuck in a rut and sit by your computer all day tapping away moaning all day. Kids are just that kids, and its all fun and excitement to them, something for them to chat with their mates about. I dont agree with taking 5 yr olds but thats up to the parents if they decide to do that.
Its funny how you 2 know so much about the x-factor, and your telling me you dont watch it, oh ok maybe you read the papers that is full of it, but no you probably skip that page dont you. NOT. Sounds like alot of jealousy where Olly is concerned, what the hell is Cod Eyed. Hes an ordinary bloke whos got lucky.

pin4apple: "Its funny how you 2 know so much about the x-factor, and your telling me you dont watch it..." Where exactly in my comments did I say I don't watch it? Please tell me, or are you just making things up to fit with your deluded arguments and emotional rants on here? If you learn to use apsotrophes and realise that 'alot' is actually two words, people might take your comments seriously - and not just see them as the inane witterings of a fool.

Wow, is this even news? Pop stars come and go, good luck to this guy, who wouldn't swap a dead-end job in a call-centre for their 15 minutes of fame?

Nothing wrong with kids doing something a bit different - it's not going to destroy their lives to be up late for a night. In the words of the Simpsons, "when they're pumping gas, it will be the highlight of their lives". Something like that. Tongue in cheek, people, don't jump on me for disrespecting gas-pumpers!

Seriously, why does this story get so much space? All kinds of stuff goes on in this town which the Gazette scarcely mentions. Anybody read "Brave New World", where the populationis kept controlled by soma? I think X-Factor is the modern day soma.

Anyway, rant over. Good luck to this guy, hope he sells millions. If he's got talent, he'll still be around in a couple of years. If not, life will carry on!

Romantic - Couldn't agree more. It's really sad.

There's no train service between Colchester and London for the fourth time this week. Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester, Chelmsford, all cut off, yet again.

The Gazette, instead, expands laughably on its coverage of O from earlier in the week, reprinting worthless rubbish. It doesn't even mention that, should the chap have been cursed to have been in Whitham, he wouldn't have been able to get anywhere. We don't all have helicopters, courtesy of Simon Cowell.

For heaven's sake. This is a town of 100K+ people. Report on something of significance.

We're not all brain-dead chavs.

I wish Olly all the best. He is a great fun guy and a born entertainer. However, Joe can sing and he will win. But then look at Susan Boyle. She came second and is getting more recognition and fame than the winners. Let's hope the same will be so for our boy Olly.
