Clacton and Frinton Gazette: Police to weed out skivers as part of force clean up Police to weed out skivers as part of force clean up

SKIVERS, slackers and those who take sickies will be kicked out of Essex Police as part of a force clean up.

A new performance improvement unit is being set up following revelations the average number of days absent for a policeman in Essex is 13.

It has risen from an average of eight in 2008.

Those with problems will be helped but those who are not good enough or who are found to be abusing the system will be dismissed.

Superintendent Dean Chapple has been put in charge of one of the performance units for attendance and there will be a second team monitoring misconduct.

He will spend the next three months assessing the reasons for absence before deciding the percentage of genuine cases.

He said: "Officers with challenges we will support but for some Essex Police may not be the place for them."
