A red Vauxhall Corsa and a large van crashed in Wivenhoe Road just before 4pm on Tuesday.
One of the vehicles crashed into a wall.
One of the drivers left the scene with an injury, and police carried out a search for him as they were concerned for his welfare.
He later contacted them to say he had taken himself to hospital, where he was receiving treatment.
His injuries are not thought to be serious.
The road was cleared by 7pm.
Anyone with information should contact Essex Police on 101.
