STAFF at a Clacton bakery have been told they face redundancy.
In-store bakers at Greggs, in Station Road are among 300 employees across the country whose jobs are at risk.
The Clacton shop, which was formally run by Baker’s Oven, is one of just 79 Greggs stores with in-store bakeries.
Most are supplied from its regional bakery network.
In-store bakeries are expected to close over the next 12 to 18 months with the loss of 300 jobs across the country.
The company said it would try to offer existing vacancies to the employees who work in the in-store bakeries, but anticipated that many would leave the company.
It is expected the move will cost the bakery £9million in redundancy costs, but save £6million a year.
It is understood bakers in Clacton were informed last Wednesday night that their roles are among those facing the axe.
One worker, who did not want to be named, said: “At the moment it is more of a shock.
“The bombshell was dropped out of the blue.”
